A Novella about a Theorem by Brendan McCann
Unlucky in love, Mathematics lecturer and mature student Billy is almost finished his PhD. He is ready for his first international Mathematics conference, to take place in Rome. He becomes acquainted with his peers and realises the pressures that many of them are under, as budgets are cut and permanent positions are almost impossible to find. Billy starts to fall in love with the vivacious and ambitious Nadja, who is an up and coming superstar of the Mathematical world. Even Nadja, who is also driven by her own insecurities has yet to secure a permanent job. Billy wonders if he could bridge the gulf between the classy Nadja and his almost non-existent status as a mathematician. A nice theorem could do the trick, but has he got it within himself to prove something entirely his own? And even if he does, will that be enough for Billy and Nadja’s blossoming love to make the grade?

I really enjoyed this book. Reading it allows you to live in the shoes of a young mathematician, understand their daily struggle to master their art, all without showing any mathematics or formula that might scare off the lay reader. It should become a modern classic, displacing Hardy’s stuffy “A Mathematician’s Apology” as the go to book recommended when one asks “what does a mathematician do?” It is a professional academic’s “coming of age” adventure quest with a beautifully written romantic interest, a much more real life story that Cédric Villani’s self-promoting book.
I just finished reading it and I so want to read a sequel to follow the story of the characters I have come to know, to learn what happened when they meet again. A novella does not have the space to finish all of the story arcs as would a novel, or indeed a series, but this one leaves the reader wanting more. The ending was full of hope and lets the reader’s imagination soar.

Looking forward to reading this book. Brendan was an exceptional character and I was surprised he turned his hand to writing. Having known Brendan I’m sure it is a great read!

Really enjoyed this unusual book. It tells of Billy, an earnest young (“unlucky in love”) mathematics lecturer – and toying with a complex theorem of his own – who attends a conference in Rome. The author warmly draws you into a heady, but never off-putting, world of advanced maths, professional rivalries, academic insecurities and…touching love story. Concise characters, light humour and deft observations make it a joy to read. I highly recommend it.
