Crossing that Bridge

(9 customer reviews)
@ Maura O'Neill

Crossing that Bridge, by Maura O’Neill, is a celebration of the landscape and rural community of North Wexford. Sara and Maisie were created from a weave of stories shared by family and friends. These main characters face challenges at a time, in the early 60s, when choices were influenced by expectation and duty. Sara has to leave home when her brother, Liam, decides to get married. She chooses London where her life changes in every way possible. Maisie marries an older man who is set in his ways. A vibrant, creative woman, the relationship doesn’t allow her to fulfil her dreams. The two young women support each other through life-changing decisions and situations that could pose a threat to their friendship as they eventually realise the time has come to cross that bridge.

I found this book to be warm and engaging. I loved the intimacy of the relations explored in an Ireland of yesteryear. The author really captures that time and the challenges faced by individuals who were expected to conform to their ‘roles’ in a patriarchal society. Well worth reading.

This beautiful book is full of nostalgia for a time gone by in the setting of rural Ireland in the 60s.We are brought into Sara’s life and relationships- friendship, romance and family and sense of community and neighbourhood.I loved how Sara struggled with wanting more and her deep ties to Mike and the familiar. Beautifully written with warmth and feeling…going to recommend this book a book club.

Fantastic story, that paints such a vivid picture of life in rural Ireland in the 1960s, friendships and struggles. I love the character Sara who strives for more from life at a time when opportunity could be limited.
