Love, Lycra and Tattoos

(6 customer reviews)
@ Kathryn Crowley

The novella Love, Lycra and Tattoos by Kathryn Crowley is the touching story of a daughter and mother who face daily challenges and life-changing events. Fiona’s mother, a single parent, is trying to keep the reality of her diagnosis from her daughter; but navigating their new terrain without transparency only leads to more difficulties.

“(this novella) has its own voice, pacing and emotional intelligence; the work is fresh, awake and wryly kind.”

-AAWP (Australian Association of Writing Programs) & Spineless Wonder Novella Prize 2024

The fictional stories in this collection provide unique insights into domestic dramas and deliver universal truths about seemingly small lives. Read about a grown man who has never left home in Adult Education, stories about the wrong people married to each other in Sitting in a Parked Car and Going Through the Motions. For a futuristic flavour, enjoy Eco Betrayals and a familial story of hope is depicted in True North, Finding a Way Home.

Love, Lycra and Tattoos is a book made up of a novella and short stories. I really enjoyed it, especially the novella which I found both very funny and poignant, a wonderful combination to find. It’s the story of a mother and daughter who irritate each other but ultimately love each other. I’ll say no more for fear of spoiling it. Just read it!
The short stories are great too, covering a wide range of genres and contexts but ultimately with great insight into the human condition. The author really master the twist at the end of the tale but in a way that feels natural, not at all contrived.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading Love, Lycra and Tattoos. Each story is unique from another. The author has a wonderful way of describing the ordinary everyday things in life, bringing real emotion into her stories. I’d recommend a story per day accompanied by a good cuppa coffee, then sit back and absorb. Great read!

Kathryn Crowley’s Love, Lycra and Tattoos is nothing short of a revelation. Once again, Crowley proves that she possesses a rare gift: the ability to distill life’s messiest, most ordinary moments into something original and brilliant. Her writing is uniquely concise and perceptive—every sentence feels carved rather than written, polished down to its essential truth.

What makes this book so extraordinary is Crowley’s deep, almost uncanny understanding of human nature. She sees people as they are, and captures the tensions that arise in close relationships, with effortless grace. The stories unfold with a quiet power, elevating the mundane into something profound, funny, and deeply moving.

In a time when many writers chase spectacle, Crowley, finds magic in the everyday.

Love, Lycra and Tattoos is proof—yet again—that Kathryn Crowley’s writing, is pure genius.

The first part of the book, the novella ( Love, Lycra and Tattoos), is the first novel written in flash-fiction style that I’ve ever read, and I enjoyed it immensely. The flash-fiction format encouraged me as a reader to pause frequently and savour the story, to tentatively puzzle out things and to read at a very satisfying pace. The second half of the book are very enjoyable twist/turn short stories, each of which surprises and entertains. I would recommend this book thoroughly, and indeed encourage all readers to delve into Crowley’s previous books, also available on buythebook.ie

Having just finished this book I closed it with a sense of happiness and contentment. The baddies got their comeuppance and the goodies all lived to tell the tale. The first part ( the novella) was a lovely well written piece about a mother and daughter relationship, including the ups and downs, misunderstandings but chiefly the love in that relationship. A feel good book that deserves to be read.
