ROWNAN An Irish Rebel Story
Roibeárd Ó Dubhlaoich
Based on the true life of William Rownan.
In Easter Week 1916, a small group of Irish rebels held back British forces at the Battle of Mount Street Bridge, the bloodiest engagement of the Rising.
Vastly outnumbered and outgunned, they delayed the advance of an empire. Later referred to by some historians and commentators as “Ireland’s Thermopylae”, the battle has come to symbolise a small force standing against overwhelming odds.
This is one of their stories.
From Dublin to New York, Willie Rownan is an ordinary Irish lad with an ordinary dream, to make a new life in America. But history has other plans.
As Ireland edges closer to rebellion, William is drawn into a world of secrecy, sworn loyalties, and impossible choices. What begins as youthful idealism hardens into duty, and duty soon demands a price he never imagined paying.
As the struggle deepens, William must weigh duty against the impact his choices have on those he loves.
Can a man survive the bloodiest battle of the Easter Rising without consequence?
Rownan: An Irish Rebel Story is an historical fiction novel told by Willie’s great grandson, that explores the human cost of revolution through the life of one ordinary man, overshadowed by silence.

Ian B –
The Battle of Mount Street Bridge during the Easter Rising was critically important as the most successful rebel military engagement of the Easter Rising. A handful of Irish Volunteers held up two British battalions for nine hours, inflicting over 200 casualties—nearly two-thirds of total British losses—which significantly delayed British reinforcements arriving from Kingstown.
This should be a fascinating read.

Firstly, the battle of Mount Street is a story worth telling. Telling it in the way the author has done is wonderful. Fiction based on fact with familial ties makes for a excellently paced walk through Willie Rowan’s many battles. Told against the backdrop of Ireland’s own battle for identity, this really is a story worth reading, especially for those with an interest in Irish Independence and Civil War history. Highly recommended.

No connection to the author. Just recently got hooked on Irish history and the Battle of Mount Street Bridge is one of the most powerful stories from the Rising. The fact this is told through a family connection makes it feel far more real. Pre ordered and looking forward to it.
