The Folks On The Hill

@ Susan Kinane

This book by Susan Kinane describes the journey of discovery of two Dubliners as they take up the challenges of rural life in a lesser known part of Ireland.  It’s a somewhat humours account of the many trials and tribulations that they encountered during their 15 years amongst the warm and welcoming people of Leitrim and North Roscommon.

Like a lot of people I had plenty on time on my hands during Covid and started this project as a means of breaking the boredom.  Husband and I had a cottage in North Roscommon, on the borders with Sligo and Leitrim and we spent 15 years using it as a holiday home.  Covid gave me the time and space to remember all the wonderful people we met there and all the adventures.  This is my first time to ever write anything and hopefully not my last.

My sister purchased this book for my birthday after her visit to West Roscommon this summer. I loved reading about all the characters in the book and the many interesting personalities on the hill!
It is definitely a lighthearted read, but I could not put it down !

this is both a humorous and fascinating account of a city girl and her husband as they navigate the vagaries of country living, from settling in and getting to know the locals, to the intricacies of the sewerage system. It was lighthearted but accurate nonetheless and it brought me back to when I lived in a rural location in the Seventies.
