The Lost Art of the Hamshiner
Gerard O'Callaghan
The Lost Art Of The Hamshiner is a witty and richly humorous story collection that captures the charm of an Irish town and the curious rhythms of public service life during the mid to late 20th century.
In 52 stories, blending fact and fiction with satire and affection, Gerard O’Callaghan recalls his early childhood and his life in the post office and the unique characters who coloured everyday life. Strange rituals such as cannibalising bicycles appear alongside a doggy delivery at the post office door, which had to be dealt with according to the rules.
The book title comes from the fictitious trade of the Hamshiner, which was created from a conversation in the office canteen about ham sandwiches.
The book contains six parts, entitled Men at Work, Quirky Tales, Religious Roguery, Sounds of Home, Boyhood’s Fire and Forays into Fiction. These stories are a loving tribute to a disappearing Ireland, full of warmth, wit and the magic of everyday absurdities.
