Thriving Talent: How Great Leaders Drive Performance, Engagement and Retention

The Irish Times bestseller

“This book goes beyond slogans about culture to show how systems, behaviours, and mindsets shape performance. Thriving Talent builds thoughtfully on the research on psychological safety, offering grounded, actionable insight for today’s workplaces.”

Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management, Harvard Business School. Author, Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well.

How many people do you know that are happy at work? As in genuinely happy?
We’ll wait…

You’ve seen the data and heard the advice — happy employees are more productive, better engagement equals better retention, and culture eats strategy for breakfast. You know the theories. But translating these ideas into action can feel overwhelming.
Does that ring a bell? If so, this book was written for you. It’s for the people leaders who want to do things differently — who dream of creating workplaces where both individuals and businesses can thrive.

After 20 years of working in the corporate world, Aoife O’Brien is on a mission to help people and teams to become happy at work. Drawing on her experience, her research, and insight from her award-winning podcast, Aoife sets out a deceptively simple, yet powerful, model for building genuine, lasting, and inclusive happiness at work, to allow your talent not just to survive, but to thrive.
You don’t need endless budgets, perfect conditions, or a complete overhaul to make a meaningful difference. You need psychological safety, three pillars, and a leadership style which aligns your efforts with your values.

And that’s exactly what this book will provide.
Let’s get started.

Who is it for?
If you’re a leader looking to build a thriving team, seeking to create more meaning and satisfaction at work, this book will help you understand what truly drives happiness, engagement, and performance, and how to create a workplace where people want to stay and grow.

Advance Praise:

“This book cuts through performative culture work and gets to what actually makes people thrive at work. Clear, evidence-based, and deeply empathetic, Thriving Talent belongs on every leader’s desk.

Lisa Bodell, Founder and CEO of FutureThink and bestselling author of Why Simple Wins

“Thriving Talent is a practical and human guide for leaders who care about both people and performance. It reinforces that lasting results come from trust, psychological safety, and leaders who create the conditions for learning and growth. Clear, grounded, and research-based, this book will affirm what great leaders already believe and challenge them to lead with greater intention.”

Garry Ridge, Chairman Emeritus, WD-40 Company and Best-Selling Author, Any Dumb Ass Can Do It

Thriving Talent is a timely, practical guide for leaders who know people are the difference but aren’t always shown how to build environments where people and performance grow together. Aoife O’Brien moves beyond surface-level tactics and offers a clear, human-centered framework for creating workplaces where people matter and truly thrive.”

I was lucky enough to be an advance reader for this book and leaders everywhere, listen up! This book holds ALL of the information you need to know to support your teams and allow their talents to thrive. I joked with the author that every leader should own this book and continuously refer back to it like they would a reference journal. It is jam packed with goodness. Zero fluff. All actionable. Aoife O’Brien outdid herself with this one!
