This is the story of a woman who beat her own path through the male-dominated world of mountaineering and how, having found love among the peaks, she went on to juggle the demands of motherhood with the enduring appeal of an extreme sport.
Clare Sheridan is Ireland’s best known female climber and her climbing memoir Uncoiling the Ropes has been recognised as a classic of mountaineering literature. She featured in the documentary Calvin and Clare (available online) along with her husband and climbing partner Calvin Torrans.
Her second memoir, A Faithful Girl, deals with her childhood in West Cork and teenage years in a convent boarding school where the lure of spiritual martyrdom almost persuaded her to commit to convent life for good. She is a retired primary school teacher and when not away on climbing trips, lives in Bray, Co Wicklow.
