WHISPERS OF THE PAST

@ Maurice Brosnan

In Whispers of the Past, Maurice Brosnan weaves a collection of unforgettable tales set in a rural Irish village brimming with secrets, mischief, and humour. Each story offers a glimpse into a bygone world, where neighbours clash and connect, and memories are as enduring as the land itself.

Meet the cast of Whispers of the Past: In “Killing Time,” a group of young lads discovers trouble—and unlikely wisdom—in the most unexpected places. “Strong Man Wanted, Donkey Dead” explores the twisted humour and tension in the village when an arrogant landowner’s taunting poster sparks outrage and stirs up old rivalries. In “Robbing Orchards,” the thrill of forbidden apples leads to a standoff between boys and a shotgun-wielding orchard owner, while “Old Man Hourihan” offers a look into the heart of a village elder who has seen it all—and isn’t afraid to share his opinions.

With tales ranging from youthful escapades to darkly humourous village feuds, Whispers of the Past invites readers into a close-knit community where laughter and grudges go hand-in-hand, and the charm of each character lingers long after the last page.

Seller Bio

Sold by: Maurice Brosnan
Maurice Brosnan grew up in rural North Cork, where family, neighbours, and friends shaped a lifelong love of story. His writing blends humour, memory, and Irish vernacular, capturing the voices and rhythms of a world that is fast fading. He is the author of A Life Unfolding, Whispers of the Past, and the poetry collection Long Shadows, Short Days. Although often asked if these stories are autobiographical, they are not memoirs — nor do they claim historical accuracy. They are stitched together from memory and imagination alike: snatches of talk, glimpses of people, half-remembered moments, and the bits and pieces of truth that life throws our way. This is not his life story, but a truthful echo of what life once was — and of how it felt in the not-so-long-ago. In truth, everyone was telling a story, even if they didn’t realise it.
