Adult Fiction by Lorraine O’Byrne
This novel centres around a young Irish woman, Louisa, compelled into the Galway Magdalene Laundries Asylum nuns due to the societal scandal of unwanted pregnancy. Her new-born daughter is unjustly taken from her, prompting her lifelong quest to FIND and reunite with her child. Louisa’s happy bright future is stolen away and her punishment is more than she could ever have anticipated. Forced to endure unspeakable cruelty, she soon discovers the personal cost of daring to believe in hope and a future with her daughter.
Decades later, real estate agent Carrie feels lost. Her parents recently perished in a tragic accident. A series of strange sightings cause Carrie to doubt her sanity, but soon she discovers the heart-breaking truth about her parents and what they kept from her.
The story unfolds through two timelines: Louisa’s narrative in the laundries and Carrie’s life experiences in her twenties. Within this narrative, a supernatural element takes shape.
Inspired by the heart-breaking reality of life for unmarried mothers in Ireland, this gripping novel will capture your heart and leave you longing for more. ‘I Will Find You’ tells the story of how one woman’s determination leads to the other’s salvation.
Lorraine O’Byrne (née Barry) was an Irish author of children’s
stories and adult fiction. Inspired by her childhood in rural
Ireland, Lorraine distilled her interest in fairies, pixies and other
supernatural creatures into her children’s stories such as The
Hippity, Dippity Witch and Lucy Pebble’s Miracle. Lorraine’s first
adult fiction was The Wrath of Voodoo in 2004, about a young
Irish teacher who went on an adventure to Kenya. Despite
an interest in the supernatural, Lorraine always brought
her trademark humour to her writing, as 2015’s Escaping the
Prince testifies.
Lorraine graduated from the University of Limerick with
a BA in Languages, History and Sociology, before obtaining
a diploma in freelance journalism and an MA in Creative
Writing, also from UL, where her tutor was bestselling Irish
author Donal Ryan.
Like so many Irish writers before her, from WB Yeats
to Edna O’Brien, Lorraine was inspired by Ireland’s natural landscapes and succeeded in seeing the ordinary in the
extraordinary. Her book Poppy the Cygnet was inspired by the
numerous swans that visit the beautiful lake of Lough Gur
each year, where Lorraine worked as a tour guide.
Lorraine spent her final years working as a carer for the
elderly in her community while she lived on a farm in Co
Limerick, with her beloved husband Donal, and their cherished
family pets. Lorraine enjoyed many outdoor pursuits such as hill
walking and horse riding. The rural chimes of farm life proved
stimulating for her imagination, as it was here, she completed
her final novel, I Will Find You, a story of a long-buried secret
seen through a supernatural prism.

A fabulouis read from this wonderful Author who I recently learned died in February 2023 2 months after finishing her novel.
Her husband had it published in her memory
This wonderfully written tale intricately weaves through the terrifying ordeal of Louisa a main character and other young girls in the Magdalene laundries and, decades later, follows Carrie’s journey to comprehend the mysteries surrounding her life.
1950 Laundries: In the face of cruel hardship, Lorraine exemplifies the resilience of the characters and the nurturing bonds that developed during their time in destitution and mistreatment, contrasting with the nuns’ life of ease. Louisa grapples with the heartbreaks caused by her family and wrestles with the blurred line between reality and fantasy.
1976 Carries mystery: A sharp-witted young woman plagued with stories that don’t add up, the heartache of parental loss, finds hers self as a detective in her own life. Not sure who she can trust around her and not sure if she can trust the reliability of her own mind
In Lorraine’s narrative incorporates elements of romance, murder, mystery, and even some supernatural sightings.
