A book for all gentle folk and faerie loving friends of all ages. Caoimhe M. Flanagan spellbinds us in this magical tale – Willow Wood Land & the World of Yesterday.
I’m delighted to hear that this is the first in a planned series published by Independent Irish Children’s Book Publisher Willow Wood Press. I’ve always been drawn to books about nature where the trees and plants are personified and faeries frolic in the wild. Flower Fairies are still one of my favourite book series and Willow Wood Land whisks you off to explore with faeries, wise trees and thoughtful flowers. The book also reminds me a little of Alice in Wonderland with a little Peter Pan mixed in for good measure.
In Willow Wood Land & The World of Yesterday we see friends Aria and Lu separated by The World of Yesterday before the Midsummer Soiree. Can Aria help save naive yet kind-hearted Lu and return her to Willow Wood Land with the help of some guardian angels of the natural world? My favourite character is Vera the weeping willow tree. She reminded me of my willow tree in my garden as a child. A tree that would very much wrap its branches around me when I was happy or sad.
The book itself is stunning. It’s that perfect mini size of hardback book that I find totally dreamy. It’s adored with gold foil on the front and a silky slither of a ribbon bookmark inside. It’s one of those titles that make a stunning gift and you want to turn front facing on your bookshelf!
I’ve read this book to my daughter – she adores it. However, it would be an ideal book for her to read on her own too. There’s great spacing of font with short chapters perfect for early independent readers. The handcrafted images in the book are sublime and give you a real sense of place. We particularly loved the crow!
