The author of Cold Porridge Tony Carroll, has extensive experience in nursing home advocacy, elder mediation and pastoral care. He was a member of the multi-agency National Advocacy Programme Alliance, which was established following RTÉ’s exposé of abuse at the Leas Cross nursing home in 2005 and was volunteer coordinator during the rollout of the first national advocacy programme across Irish nursing homes. He has developed and managed advocacy services in diverse and complex nursing home environments, mentored volunteers and pastoral placement students and has also served on HSE and Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) working groups.

A member of several professional bodies, Tony continues to practise as a pastoral visitor and also as a volunteer community visitor and telephone befriender with Alone. He is passionate about combating loneliness in nursing homes and is currently working with national partners to establish a dedicated visitation programme for all residents.

Tony graduated with a BA in theology and philosophy from All Hallows College, earned a BSc from Dublin City University and a master’s from Trinity College Dublin. He previously held senior management positions in the HSE.
