I love it when a young person comes up with an idea they feel will support them on this journey we call life and then they make it happen. That is a little bit of magic all in itself to be celebrated.

In doing so, through the creation of the TY Journal, Finn Neville, has not just served his own needs but has provided the means in a simple concept to serve loads of other young people too in their transition year.

The TY Journal supports many things and in particular, well-being which the science tells us is what must be in place for sustainable long-term performance. It does it in a few ways.

It provides the opportunity for young people to start paying real attention to their experiences, the stories they create around them and how these play out for real before, so they can challenge them during and after their work experiences because 85% of the things we fear will happen to us won’t!

It lets a young person build better self-awareness around what they liked and didn’t like because the more you can do that the better the future career decisions you can make rather than feeling you are operating from a blank page.

The journal also enables the downloading of thoughts so they get them out of their heads without them being lost especially as we get subjected to more data in a day now than a person got in their whole lifetime in the 1900s. Unfortunately, our brain has not evolved to cope and young people are experiencing record levels of anxiety and stress.

Even the act of physically writing or drawing, where there is plenty of space to do both in the TY Journal, can have a calming impact and it provides the space for reflection on the learning achieved and a reminder to celebrate these moments too.

Lastly is easy to forget our journey and this can be a wonderful keepsake for the future and indeed even handed down to the generations yet to come.
