Remembering Me
‘I think it was this night that we fully bonded and became good friends. We began to look out for each other instead of trying to get ahead and only think of ourselves. We were individuals, but we were also a team. A family. We were and always would be the St. Angela girls. People spoke about the brotherly bond that men formed when they became soldiers of war, but nobody ever spoke about the sisterly bond formed between the women who nursed during the war.’

Remembering Me recalls the journey of Lucy’s life, especially her years as a nurse during World War II. During these pivotal years, Lucy and the brave women that she nursed with formed a sisterly bond which carried them through their lives. From the first page, Lucy is remembering faces and memories of her long life and through old photographs she tells her story to her daughter and granddaughter with the help of her lifelong friend and fellow nurse, Lilian. With old memories comes old feelings that have been locked away for over 50 years. Will Lucy be able to tell her story after all this time? Will her granddaughter and daughter be able to accept this new image of Lucy? Will they be able to hear the family secrets that have been locked away for over half a century?
‘I am remembering me. I am remembering all the different parts of myself, all the various phases of my life, all the ways that I have looked and acted. I am wholeheartedly remembering me and who I was when I was with loved ones of my past. I am remembering how I was in these phases and how I have since changed.’

This novel mostly set in WW2 shows in much detail the lives of nurses during this difficult time. Lucy sharing her story reminded me of Rose in Titanic who told her own story about the ship. The flicking from present to past with Lucy and her daughter, granddaughter and Lucy’s friend, Lillian, is a tale of how we really don’t know the people we share our life with.

A heartfelt story set during the Second World War. The characters are believable and convey the close bonds built between nurses in the midst of great suffering and death. Reading this book the words : “Lest we forget,” kept cropping up in my head from “Recessional.” by Rudyard Kipling. Ultimately, with the world teetering on the edge of a Third World War, this is a timely novel because we must not for one second take for granted the peaceful times which many of us in the Western World enjoy.
