THE CALLING

@ Noel Lynagh

Jamie Russell, a thoroughly indoctrinated, if individualistic, Irish Catholic boy comes to believe that he has a vocation to priesthood. And so primed, sets out on a very singular journey.
The journey includes his seminarian-stage change of mind on the priesthood idea, followed by his removal to London. He responsively takes to the lay-world, enjoying its pleasures and accepting its hardships; but never loving it, as such. The day comes when circumstances cause him to revisit his old vocation whereby he perceives that that had been the right path all along. The ‘call’ is consummate now, however, leading him into a monastery in England.
Three years later, Jamie (‘Brother Damien’), a functioning monk in the monastery, has become a confirmed atheist. He has adopted an exceedingly abysmal, negative view of the world and is in a very despondent state of mind. A chance visit by a younger sibling opens new doors to his thinking.
Soon after, back in London, Jamie reflects upon the factors which inspired his vocation to the priesthood in the first place, initiating in the process his conception of a phenomenally new meaning to Life. The meaning axiomatically rebuts the conventional idea(s) of God while implicating a much more analytical logic to Creation, i.e., essentially, humanity.
On a personal level, the conception provides Jamie with the long-sought understanding of himself.
